![]() ![]() ![]() This chapter describes the key economic forces and pressures that are affecting employment. Steady employment gains since the 2008–09 global recession have led to continued improvements in Ontario’s unemployment rate, which was at an eight‐year low at 6.5 per cent in 2016. The Ontario economy produced 76,400 net new jobs in 2016, nearly three-quarters of which are standard full-time jobs. ![]() While there are challenges, it should also be recognized that the labour market continues to function well for most people. It is all but certain that technological progress will continue in the future however, it is less certain whether globalization will have as much impact as it has had in the past. Economic pressures related to globalization and technological advances have led to changes in the labour market and the nature of employment.
